 October Issue of ORCHIDS

This month, Jim Cootes continues his series on the genus Dendrobium with a survey of the species that comprise section Densiflora (now called section Callista). These popular dendrobiums are easy to grow and produce stunningly beautiful specimens. Gisela Utz discusses general orchid culture in her article called "Caring for Orchids in the Greenhouse." For those without greenhouses, don't let the titlTe scare you off. The article is chock-full of valuable information to all growers. Sexual dimorphism (remarkably different male and female flowers) is rare in orchids, commonly only in the Catasetinae. Günter Gerlach discusses the sex lives of these plants in his article "The True Sex Life of Catasetum and Cycnoches and rounding out our October issue, Tim Culbertson presents a beautiful article on breeding miniature lycastes.

This Year's Orchids Magazine Supplement on the Slipper Orchids - Included with the October issue of Orchids

This year’s annual supplement
features a group of Orchids that have been steadily gaining in popularity for several years. The slipper orchids comprise five genera, Paphiopedilum, Phragmipedium, Mexipedium, Cypripedium and Selenipedium. The first two are the largest genera and the most popular in our collections. Still, the single species Mexipedium xerophyticum is becoming increasingly easier to find and turns out not to be that hard to grow.
